I am by Rebecca Fatharly

womani am

Synopsis: This poem highlights the crisis that women suffer at the hands of poisonous societal norms that have weaved themselves into mainstream media. The effect of this causes women of all ages to suffer from low self-esteem, depression and other mental health disorders, because we are all told we must behave in a certain way, look a certain way, and be passive to the world around us. However, I wrote this poem to show that there are contradictions in the media, which leads to confusion and how ultimately, women need to break free from the chains of gender culture.

Bio: I am currently a second-year undergraduate studying English and American Literature at the University of Kent. After graduating I wish to become a Journalist or freelance writer.
